Vibration white finger/hand arm vibration syndrome
This is caused by over use of vibrating hand-held machinery.
Typical offenders include pneumatic drills, jack hammers and electrical grinders. Also dental technicians using hand-held polishers have been affected.
People with this condition initially complain of numbness and tingling in the hands. This can persist for months or years until the person progresses to the next stage which can involve blanching or whitening of the fingers in response to cold. Some people go on to develop bone and joint problems in the hand and arm and may develop Raynaud’s syndrome, which is a circulatory disturbance of the hands.
