Noise induced hearing loss/tinnitus claims for compensation
Boyes Turner's industrial disease team is acting for Mr M who worked as a deckhand, operating boats out of Ramsgate during the 1970s and 1980s.
Whilst employed, Mr M worked 12 hour shifts on pilot vessels known as “VE” boats which had a mid-ship wheelhouse situated over 2 x 225 horse-power Cummins engines. He was exposed to the noise from these engines. He was required to sit on a chair situated on top of the engine. The level of noise was such that Mr M was unable to speak to his colleagues.
During Mr M’s period of employment he was not given any warnings in respect of the noise levels and he was not provided with any adequate protection. He now suffers from hearing loss.
Since receiving instructions to act for Mr M, we have received instructions from many of Mr M’s work colleagues. His work colleagues were involved with the pilot launches operating out of Ramsgate, Sheerness, Harwich and Folkestone. They all report hearing loss and/or tinnitus.
Compensation for each noise induced hearing loss/tinnitus claim will differ. However, it is expected that each claim will attract compensation of between £4,750 for slight or occasional tinnitus with slight hearing loss and £58,000+ for total deafness in both ears. In addition, individuals will be able to claim other elements such as wage loss, care, future losses, medical expenses, pension loss, special equipment, i.e. hearing aids.
