Compensation for man exposed to asbestos working for Esso oil refinery, Fawley
Boyes Turner's industrial disease lawyers were instructed by Mr S in June 2007.
He had recently been diagnosed with mesothelioma following the onset of symptoms in October 2006. His symptomes included breathing difficulties, as well as night sweats and flu like symptoms. Only after a chest x-ray was carried out, was his condition diagnosed correctly.
Mr S worked as a pipe fitter and then as a Supervisor for Esso at the Fawley Refinery, from 1960 until his retirement. He undertook a large amount of pipe work, and had to remove asbestos from the pipes to work on them. In cases where a large amount of asbestos had to be removed laggers came in to strip it off, and then repair the asbestos lagging when the work was completed. Mr S was always working alongside them.
He was exposed to particularly significant levels of asbestos during the shut down periods at the refinery when there were intense periods of work. It was a very dusty environment.
Before the diagnosis of his condition, he was keen on DIY, and had acquired a large number of building skills during his lifetime.
Sadly he died in November 2007.
His mesothelioma claim settled for £155k (settlement net of benefits received and payment under the Pneumoconiosis Workers Compensation Act).
