Pleural plaques
What is it?
This is a small isolated thickening of the inside of the rib cage. It results from breathing in any form of asbestos and is the most common type of (benign) asbestos related lung disease. Typical occupations where pleural plaques occur include plumbers, electricians, builders and engineers. It usually takes a minimum of 10 years following exposure for the first signs of the disease to show up on a regular chest x-ray. The calcification (chalky deposit) which pleural plaques sometimes develop usually becomes visible after a further 10 years.
Will I get worse?
Not necessarily. Pleural plaques do not develop into a more serious condition, cause breathlessness or result in chest pain. However, it is proof that you have been exposed to asbestos and you have an increased risk of developing a more serious asbestos related condition.
Is compensation available?
Please do contact us. We have a large number of clients on whose behalf we are lobbying and for whom we are watching the developments in Parliament.
Pleural plaques which do not impair breathing do not currently entitle you to compensation. However it is likely that the right compensation will be reinstated. When it is we would like to be able to move at once to bring your claim. We can start the process now and save time later.
