Occupational asthma
Has your work caused you breathing difficulties?
142,000 people in the UK believe their breathing or lung problems to be caused or exacerbated by their work.
What is it?
Occupational asthma is a lung disorder that causes breathlessness due to various substances found in the workplace.
Sufferers have chronic inflammation of the bronchi (air passages) which causes swelling and narrowing of the air passages leading to breathlessness.
Bakers and flour confectioners, metal making and treating process operatives and vehicle spray painters are particularly at risk of developing work related asthma.
Forestry workers, chemical, plastic, and rubber workers, textile workers, electrical and electronic production workers, as well as storage workers, farm workers, waiters, cleaners, painters, dental workers and laboratory technicians are also all in potentially high risk roles for developing work related asthma.
Symptoms include:
- Coughing
- Tight feeling in chest
- Shortness of breath
- Wheezing
- Difficulty exercising
Will I get worse?
Asthma is usually reversible when recognised and treated early. However permanent lung damage can occur if exposure to the substance that causes the condition continues over a prolonged period.
