Asbestosis
What is it?
The term asbestosis is often misused (even by health professionals) to describe almost any asbestos related condition. This often creates problems and confusion as it is a very specific condition that refers to the scarring of the lung itself, (not the pleural membrane which is diffuse pleural thickening or fibrosis).
Often, asbestosis results from significant exposure to asbestos fibres, with effects usually appearing 20 or more years after exposure. Symptoms include coughing and breathlessness and in more extreme cases respiratory failure and death. Asbestosis often leads to sufferers being more susceptible to lung cancer, mesothelioma and disabling diffuse pleural thickening. Where a cancer develops, it is much more difficult to treat than in the absence of asbestosis.
