Coroner confirms asbestos related death of CEGB worker
Mr F worked for the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) at Marchwood Power Station Southampton in the 1960s and 1970s. He died of mesothelioma aged 64 in July 2007. Mr F was found to have a very high mineral fibre count in his lungs on post mortem. The Coroner Alan Crickmore recorded death by industrial disease mesothelioma.
Before his death Mr F prepared a statement confirming that while he worked in closed spaces with the air thick with asbestos dust it was not until the 1970s that safety masks were introduced.
In the 1960s employers were sufficiently aware of the risks of asbestos to make proper protection of workers mandatory. The failure to properly protect workers across many industries has resulted in the suffering and death of thousands of people each year from avoidable asbestos related diseases.
