Wiltshire carpenter dies of asbestos related lung cancer

Mr Bilby 81 died in November 2007. The coroner's inquest has just taken place at Trowbridge Town Hall, Wiltshire. The coroner Mr David Masters recorded death due to lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure.

Mr Bilby was exposed to asbestos while working in the Ministry of Defence underground base near Corsham in Wiltshire. The majority of the undergound tunnels were lined with asbestos sheeting. When the sheeting was damaged or being repaired asbestos particles would circulate in the atmosphere throughout the entire complex.

The coroner reported that he knew of at least six other cases of death by industrial disease caused by the underground base in the last 18 years.
