Parliament moves towards compensation for asbestos pleural plaques victims
The Damages (Asbestos-Related Conditions) Bills were debated in both Houses of Parliament at the same time on Friday 5 February 2010. If passed, the Bills will allow pleural plaques sufferers to claim compensation for their asbestos exposure.
Two Bills have been simultaneously introduced in both Houses of Parliament with both Bills passing their Second Reading.
However, while the Bill in the Lords has now been scheduled for Committee Stage, the Bill in the House of Commons went straight onto Committee Stage, then onto Report Stage and finally onto the Third Reading, which it also passed without opposition on the same afternoon!
The Bill from the House of Commons has now been passed to the House of Lords meaning that the Lords will now be debating the same Bill but at different stages. To combat this strange position, both Houses could enter into ‘horse-trading’ and merge both Bills into one so that it can be expedited into law.
The date of the House of Lords' Committee Stage has not yet been announced.
