Kim Smerdon

In brief

As head of the personal injury team, Kim's clients include claimants in all types of personal injury cases including road traffic accidents, workplace accidents, criminal injuries and product liability. She also deals with all types of asbestos disease claims, including mesothelioma, asbestosis, pleural thickening and asbestos related lung cancer.

In work

Recent successes include:

  • Acting for a man who developed pleural thickening following his exposure to asbestos with his employer whilst working as an engineer on a number of power stations in the 60's and 70's in the north of England. As a result of the disease, he is unable to carry on working in the offshore pipeline industry, resulting in a significant loss of earnings claim of some £300,000. Liability has been admitted.

  • £50,000 for a man who developed asbestosis after being exposed to asbestos with several different employers whilst working as a joiner in the 60's. He worked for a number of building companies in various locations across the north of England including Manchester, Runcorn, Macclesfield, Knutsford and Ellesmere Port.

  • £45,000 for a man who developed pleural thickening following his exposure to asbestos while making fireproof doors. He had to cut asbestos sheeting to size using a skill saw and this would produce a lot of asbestos dust which he would breathe in day in day out.

Industry associations

Memberships include the Law Society's Personal Injury Panel, the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (Senior Litigator). Kim has lectured to various organisations, including the CAB and support organisations, on a wide variety of personal injury subjects. She has also given TV and radio interviews on transport disasters such as the Paddington and Ufton Nervet rail crashes, the group action for claimants sustaining burns from chemicals used in the manufacture of leather sofas, as well as having acted for many of the victims of these accidents.

In the past

Kim graduated from Essex University and Guildford Law School, before qualifying in 1994. She subsequently moved to a Surrey law firm where she became a Partner and joined Boyes Turner as a Partner in 1999.

In her spare time

Kim enjoys music – she sings (or tries to!) in a band of sorts and is learning to play the piano. She also enjoys walking, running and climbing. Kim has completed the Three Peaks Challenge, climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours raising over £35,0000 for The Debbie Fund, a charity set up to raise funds for research into cervical cancer. Kim has recently run the Reading Half Marathon on behalf of Headway Thames Valley and the London 10K on behalf of the Child Brain Injury Trust.
